Rarer endocrine disorders that require referral to a paediatric endocrinologist include:

Babies born with ambiguous genitalia, also known as intersex disorders.
Bone and calcium disorders
Water and electrolyte imbalances such as diabetes insipidus
Adrenal gland disorders including Cushing syndrome and Addison’s disease
Hirsutism, severe acne and polycystic ovary syndrome.



A paediatric endocrinologist and diabetologist is a doctor who specializes in the function of the glands and hormones in a child’s body. Some of the major endocrine glands include the pituitary and hypothalamus, the thyroid and parathyroid, adrenal glands, gonads (testes and ovaries) and the pancreas.
